25 year anniversary of GAC’s incorporation

Today marks 25 years of Gumala Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) operating to represent the interests of Banjima, Yinhawangka and Nyiyaparli peoples of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Incorporated on 22 July 1996, the establishment of the corporation paved the way for the management of the General Gumala Foundation and the management of funds from Hamersley Iron’s Yandi mine.

In 1996 when the Corporation was formed, there were just 35 Members making the application. Today, that number has grown to 1,936 members throughout the world making GAC one of Australia’s largest Indigenous organisations providing direct relief from poverty and misfortune to its Members through the delivery of programs each year.

We’ve come a long way from those early days and it’s important that as we move forward, we constantly align ourselves to the aspirations of the people in those early days. We recognise and pay our respects to those elders who came together for the agreement, and to their children and grandchildren who have now broadened the member base by following in their footsteps.
